since i love music so much, i'm constantly bringing up the classic bar conversation, "if you were stranded on a desert island and could bring five CDs with you to listen to, what would they be?". it always brings interesting people to the table, and there's constant debate over the choices (even if it is purely personal, and bound to change by the number of drinks you've consumed).
well, i'm sending the question to the masses, but with one giant caveat: i want to know the five greatest ROCK albums of all time. by rock i mean you can include seattle, include the early 80's punk scene, add the british invasions of both the '60s and '80s. add metal, add the rock/rap shit if you think it belongs.
to light this candle, here's what post and i came up with today while we were supposed to be working (note: this is in no particular order, which is kind of a cop out):
rush - moving pictures
led zeppelin - III
the beatles - abbey road
the jimi hendrix experience - axis: bold as love
guns n' roses - appetite for destruction
now go squabble! this list is going to be decimated, as it should, but that's why it was posted: for dialogue on great music. voice your opinion, this is america, dammit!

I can tell you what I would NOT bring...
any Led Zeppelin, Beatles, or Rush! Man alive Nick did you grow up under a rock?
remember, kids, this is for discourse!
G n' R I can deal with, but Rush- yeah- I'd throw myself in a feeding frenzy if I was deserted with Rush. Ortho Girl
ah, rush. love 'em or hate 'em... there's no middle ground.
cool list. mine goes like this.
stevie wonder greatest hits
prince greatest hits
public enemy- it takes a nation of million..
sade greatest hits.
red hot chilli peppers-sex,blood, sugar, magic
I would definately have to say Pink Floyd The Wall is one of the best albums of all time. Couldn't be on an island tripping on some scorpion venom w/o Floyd in the background. "Is there anyone out there"
that's a great observation and a glaring oversight on mine and post's part. we were loaded on that scorpion venom when we came up with the list!
Not a bad list Mr. 2's; Here's my top 5, not necessarily what I think are the top 5 EVER per se...
#5: Allman Brothers, Back Where it all Begins
#4: Eric Clapton, Unplugged(I know Nick, sacrelige to you..)
#3: Pink Floyd, Wish you were here.
#2: U2, The Joshua Tree
#1: Stevie Ray Vaughan, The Sky is Crying
Judge as you will, but can't live without 'em.

I was having trouble with this one, BUT THEN, I had a sign. Like some one was speaking to me from above...or below. The King of Pop is aquitted on all 10 accounts. It's gotta be Michael Jackson's THRILLER!
Did I mention I plan on killing myself after being stuck on the island for one day?
In all seriousness:
moe.—Wormwood
Phish—Lawn Boy
Bob Marley—Babylon By Bus
Talking Heads—Stop Making Sense
Miles Davis—Kind of Blue
(yes...my island would be one gigantic ganga field...with a couple of palm trees)
i'm with you on those... my rock roots have been sweetened with a few years on the jam scene.
i can see where this is going, and i'm digging it. many ideas on display - keep 'em coming!
I'm hoping Rush drops off of Nick's list once Bo Bice's first album comes out. Could a guy named Bo Bice be from anywhere but Alabama? Yeah, I'll give you Mississippi.
I'm not sure this is what Nick would call rock, but it's the closest I come to rock, truth be told...
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Bruce Springsteen - The Essential
The Jayhawks - Rainy Day Music
Cat Stevens - Saturnight
Simon & Garfunkel - The Concert in Central Park (Live)
thanks, erin, for the 5 greatest rock albums, eeeeeeeeeeeasy listening edition.
Gotta have:
Allman Brothers Band--Live at Fillmore East
The Who--Whos Next
The Band--Music from Big Pink
U2--Joshua Tree
Blind Faith--Blind Faith
well said, my friend. well said!
"Of all time" is considerably different than listening to music by yourself on an island until the batteries die and you kill yourself, but here you go. Not in any particular order.
* The Clash: London Calling
* The Police: Outlandos d'Amour
* Jimi Hendrix Experience: Are you experienced
* Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon
* Talking Heads: Remain in the Light.
By the Way, If I WAS on a desert island, I would keep The Clash, The Police, and Talking Heads, but ditch the classic rock for...
* Steely Dan: Katy Lied
* Bob Marley: Exodus
Yours in discourse,
Johnny the Hooker
this is the goods. a well thought out, unique, eclectic list that nobody can dispute. each record has huge significance in popular music and still influences today's artists. well done, johnny!
Well, I've been debating this in my head for a while, and it's tough to come up with just 5. Nick already knows my desert island picks - those are easy - but the best of all time?!? Damn, that's a tough one, but here goes:
I've gotta agree with Johnny on The Clash, although I disagree on the album ...
• The Clash - The Clash (UK Version)
• The Beatles - Revolver
• Pixies - Doolittle
• Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
• Van Morrison - Astrel Weeks
Honorable Mention:
• Soundgarden - Badmotorfinger
Dana
The Smiths - Louder Than Bombs
The Cure - Disintegration
Rammstein - Sehnsucht
Slayer - Seasons In The Abyss
Any Tom Jones album
Alright Nick since you harrassed me I am going to post my list for you.
1. REM- Eponymous
2. Nirvana- Smells Like Teen Spirit (give it up to the Seattle Grunge scene)
3. U2- Joshua Tree
4. Sublime- 40 Oz. To Freedom
5. Face to Face- Everything is Everything (one of the best punk bands EVER!)
The last two are my personal favorites. Most wouldn't consider them the best albums ever, but man how do you choose? There's just too many awesome albums out there.
~Molly
There is some good stuff on that list....However not all could classify as best of all times...Rush would have to go, Gnr is good rock, but can't make the final cut.....So...that leaves us with Led Zeppelin III. We will keep that. It would be even more useful if it were the vinyl because the album jacket is a lot of fun to play with. As for Abbey Road, well....It truly is a great work, but I would have to swap that out for some MC5 Kick Out the Jams. That leaves us with Axis Bold As Love....that is a keeper of course. As for the remaining two slots I would say The Who's Live at Leeds, and Social Distortion's Live at the Roxy.
